Why isoflavones can reduce cardiovascular risk

Why isoflavones can reduce cardiovascular riskAustralian researchers have found another reason why foods rich in isoflavones can reduce cardiovascular risk. In the June issue of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology Dr. Helena j Teede and her colleagues (Monash University, Clayton, Australia) and the results of their randomized, crossover study. During two 6-week periods 46 healthy men and 34 women in postmenopausal women (age 45-75 years) took isoflavones derived from red clover, or placebo. The total daily dose of isoflavones (mainly formononetin and biochanin) was 80 mg. "The intake of isoflavones significantly reduced the stiffness of the arterial wall, total peripheral resistance and pulse wave velocity", the authors write. "Perhaps this partially explains the reduction in the risk of cardiovascular diseases in populations who are rich in isoflavones food", suggests Dr. Teede and her colleagues.
